Northern Virginia is the most populous region in the Commonwealth, and there are multiple law firms and attorneys who practice in criminal defense. To best position yourself in court, it is critical that you have an attorney who is not only a staple in the jurisdiction where you have been charged, but also a seasoned criminal defense attorney. Hiring an attorney who understands the criminal court process in Virginia is the first step in building the best defense for your case.
Understanding Criminal Cases in Virginia’s Judicial System: District Court & Circuit Court
Misdemeanor and felony crimes originate in either district court or circuit court. The district courts include General District Courts and the Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Courts. There are more than 30 judicial districts in Virginia and each county (or city) has its own General District Court. If you have been charged with a criminal or traffic misdemeanor, your case will be heard in district court. A felony crime must first go through a preliminary hearing in district court before it is certified for trial in circuit court.
